How gel-based diode laser hair removal works
Diode lasers emit light at a wavelength that the melanin in hair absorbs well, while reaching deep into the follicle. The light turns into heat inside the hair shaft and damages the follicle that produces it.
Before treatment, a thin layer of clear gel is spread over the area. It helps the handpiece glide evenly over larger areas such as the legs and back, and helps keep the skin surface cool and comfortable. The gel is wiped off at the end of the session.
Gel diode or our main laser hair removal?
Skin & Laser offers two laser hair removal options, each with its own price list. Our main laser hair removal menu uses Smartitrion-Q and diode technology, with single sessions from AED 50 and 3- and 6-session packages. The gel-based diode menu on this page is a different machine, priced by area with 6-session packages, and is a popular value choice for large areas such as full legs, back and full body.
Both work on the same principle and need a course of sessions. At your consultation the doctor checks your skin type, hair colour and the areas you want treated, and recommends the option that suits you.

How many sessions you need
Most areas need 6 to 8 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart, because only hairs in the active growth phase respond at each visit. Hormone-driven areas such as the face and the male back may need more, plus occasional top-ups. A 6-session package covers a typical course at a lower price per session.
What a session feels like
The gel feels cool on the skin and each pulse feels like a warm snap. Most people find it comfortable. Afterwards the skin may look slightly red, with small bumps around the follicles, for a few hours.
Before and after your session
- Shave the area the day before, and do not wax, pluck or thread for 4 weeks
- Avoid sun and tanning for 2 weeks before and after each session
- Skip the gym, sauna and hot showers for 24 to 48 hours
- Use SPF 50 on treated areas that are exposed to the sun

Safety and suitability
Diode lasers can treat a wide range of skin tones when the settings are matched to the skin; darker or tanned skin needs adjusted settings. Laser is not used over tattoos or moles, or during pregnancy. Read about laser hair removal for dark skin.
