Why skin tone matters
Lasers target melanin, the pigment in hair. Darker skin also contains more melanin, so the wrong wavelength or setting can heat the skin instead of the follicle. That is what causes burns or patches of lighter or darker skin.
How we keep darker skin safe
- Longer wavelengths that are absorbed less by the skin
- Longer pulse durations and lower energy per pulse
- Contact cooling before, during and after each pulse
- A test patch before the first full session when needed
- Strict sun avoidance before and after treatment
Our technology
At Skin & Laser we use a diode laser with long-pulse settings and Smartitrion-Q, and your doctor chooses the device and settings for your skin type.
What to expect
Results are just as good on darker skin, but progress can be a little more gradual because settings are more conservative. Most people need 8 or more sessions, with occasional top-ups.
Questions people ask
Is laser hair removal safe for very dark skin?
Yes, with the right wavelength and settings. Nd:YAG and long-pulse diode are commonly used for the darkest skin types.
Can laser cause dark marks on brown skin?
Temporary darkening can happen, mainly after sun exposure or too-high settings. Correct settings and sun protection keep the risk low.
Can I have laser if I'm tanned?
Wait until the tan fades. Tanned skin absorbs more laser energy and is more likely to react.
