Hair transplant recovery: a week-by-week timeline

Hair Transplant Recovery Timeline, Week by Week at Skin & Laser Dubai
Quick answerScabs fall away within two weeks, transplanted hairs shed between weeks two and eight, new growth starts around month three, and the final result arrives at 12 to 18 months.

Knowing what to expect after a hair transplant makes recovery calmer. This is the typical timeline we share with patients at DrypSkin Clinic. Your own recovery may be a little faster or slower.

Days 1 to 3

Expect mild tightness and some swelling across the forehead, which can drift towards the eyes on day two or three. Sleep with your head raised, avoid touching the grafts and take the medication you were given. Your first gentle wash is usually on day two or three.

Days 4 to 14

Small crusts form around each graft and loosen with daily washing. By day ten to fourteen they have fallen away. Redness fades over the following weeks. Most people return to desk work after five to seven days.

  • Avoid the gym for about two weeks
  • Avoid swimming, saunas and direct sun on the scalp for about four weeks
  • Wear a loose hat outdoors if needed

Weeks 2 to 8: the shedding phase

Transplanted hairs shed. This is called shock loss and it is expected. The follicle stays safely under the skin and rests before regrowing. Some patients also notice temporary thinning of nearby native hair.

Shedding is not failure. It is the follicle resetting before new growth.

Month 3

Fine new hairs start to appear. They may look thin and wavy at first.

Month 6

Most patients see a clear change in coverage and can style their hair again. This is a good moment for a photo review and, if helpful, a PRP session to support growth.

Months 9 to 18

Hair thickens, darkens and settles into its natural direction. The crown is often slower than the front. The final result is judged at 12 to 18 months.
