The first question almost every patient asks is how many grafts they will need. It is a good question, because the graft count shapes the plan, the time in clinic and the price. Here is how doctors estimate it.
What is a graft?
A graft is a follicular unit: a natural group of one to three hairs, occasionally four, that grow together from the scalp. Because units hold two hairs on average, 2,000 grafts is roughly 4,000 hairs. Single-hair grafts are kept for the hairline, where softness matters, and multi-hair grafts go behind for density.
The Norwood scale
The Norwood scale describes male pattern hair loss in seven stages, from a full hairline (stage 1) to only a band of hair around the sides and back (stage 7). Typical ranges are:
- Norwood 2: 800 to 1,500 grafts, a refinement at the temples
- Norwood 3: 1,500 to 2,200 grafts, deeper temple recession
- Norwood 4: 2,000 to 3,000 grafts, front loss with early crown thinning
- Norwood 5: 3,000 to 3,800 grafts
- Norwood 6: 3,500 to 4,500 grafts, often over two sessions
- Norwood 7: 4,500 or more, usually staged

Why your donor area matters more than your bald area
The back and sides of the scalp hold a limited, non-renewable supply of follicles. A good plan uses them wisely: rebuilding the frame of the face first, and leaving enough reserve in case hair loss progresses later. Taking too many grafts in one go can leave the donor area visibly thin.
The right number of grafts is the number that looks natural today and still makes sense in twenty years.
Other things that change the count
- Hair calibre: thick hair covers more with fewer grafts.
- Colour contrast: dark hair on light skin needs more density to look full.
- Curl: wavy or curly hair gives more visual coverage.
- Goals: a hairline restoration needs fewer grafts than full coverage.
The bottom line
Online calculators give a useful starting range, but only an examination of your donor density and the pattern of your loss can give a reliable number. Send us three photos and a doctor will tell you what is realistic.
Questions people ask
How many grafts does a Norwood 3 need?
A Norwood 3 usually needs about 1,500 to 2,200 grafts to rebuild the hairline and temples, confirmed by a doctor at consultation.
Can I get 5,000 grafts in one session?
Very large single sessions risk over-harvesting the donor area. Many advanced cases are better treated in two planned sessions.
How many hairs are in one graft?
A graft, or follicular unit, usually holds one to three hairs, occasionally four. On average that is about two hairs per graft.
